Check a chiropractor before your first visit

Since 2020, Lebanese law protects the title of chiropractor, and only licensed practitioners may use it. Search the register by name, clinic, town or licence number.

Some back pain needs a hospital, not a chiropractor

Go to an emergency department, or call the Lebanese Red Cross on 140, if back or neck pain comes with any of these.

  • Numbness around the groin, buttocks or inner thighs
  • Weakness in a leg or arm that is getting worse
  • A sudden, severe headache unlike any before
  • Pain after a car accident, fall or other serious injury

  • Chest pain, or trouble speaking, seeing or swallowing

    What happens at a first visit

    1. Questions about your health

      Your chiropractor asks about the pain, your medical history, medicines and daily life.

    2. An examination

      They check movement, posture, strength and reflexes. Scans are only requested when there is a clear reason.

    3. An explanation, then your consent

      You hear what they found, the options and any risks. Nothing starts until you agree, and you can stop at any time.

    4. A plan, or a referral

      Care usually combines hands-on treatment with exercises. If chiropractic is not right for you, they refer you to someone who is.

    You can bring someone with you, and ask for a written summary of your plan.

    Questions to ask your chiropractor

    Good practitioners welcome these. Ask them at your first visit.

    • What do you think is causing my pain?
    • What treatment do you suggest, and what are the alternatives?
    • What are the risks, and how common are they?
    • How many visits should I expect, and when will we review progress?
    • What can I do at home to help?
    • When would you refer me to a doctor or another specialist?
    • What will it cost in total?
    Informed consent

    Before any treatment starts, your chiropractor should explain, in words you understand:

    • What they found, and what they think is going on
    • The treatment they suggest, and what it involves
    • The expected benefits, and the possible risks
    • Other options, including doing nothing or seeing another professional

    You can ask questions, take time to decide, bring someone with you, and stop at any point. Agreeing once does not mean agreeing to everything that follows.

    Twenty years to a law that protects patients

    1. 2000

      By 2000, five chiropractors practise in Beirut and begin working toward a law.

    2. 2006

      The Lebanese Chiropractic Association is reactivated.

    3. 2012

      A chiropractic bill reaches parliament, but stalls over a rule that patients would need a medical referral first.

    4. 2020

      The law passes: licences, a protected title, a code of conduct and a disciplinary process.

    What it means for you

    • Only licensed practitioners may call themselves chiropractors.
    • Chiropractors do not prescribe medicines or perform surgery.
    • They follow a code of conduct, and you can raise a concern about any practitioner.
